This Week at Hedsor Jazz

This Thursday (June 30th) we have our second session with Ken McCarthy on keyboard. Last weeks evening at Hedsor Jazz with Ken and vibraphone player Alan Grahame was hugely enjoyable. Sadly Mike Wills was unable to be with us on reeds through a spot of illness so we were unable to have a bit of the Benny Goodman recreation that they have been so successful with this last couple of years. I did record last weeks session anyway, but as yet have not had the time to remaster it.

This week we have another special guest in tenor saxophonist Robert Goodhew. A truly wonderful young player who has a great tone and an interesting and very listenable way with improvisation. He should combine very well with Ken McCarthy and I am looking forward to it.

Of course, I should also mention the other members of the band who will be around on Thursday (whom I am also looking forward to listening to!). Our usual master of ceremonies and of the trombone, teller of jokes and caller of the raffle ticket numbers, Mr Clive Burton will be with us of course, as will Martin Hart on drums and Ken Rankine on bass. Mike Wills will be away, this time his absence is a planed break!

What more could you want from a night of jazz? At the entry price of £6 nothing at all!! OK we could charge double, some places charge that and more for the same quality, (and sometimes the same musicians!). It is more important that live jazz has a place to thrive, and that place has been The Hedsor Social Club for the last 14 years. So we will keep the price down as long as we can. Thank you for your support, and please tell your friends. Even people who haven’t ever before expressed an interest in jazz have found our live jazz Thursday evenings have become an addiction!!

One last thought on last weeks show. Many thanks to Gil for the wonderful spread of food he put on which helped us all celebrate his 61 years of marriage. Well done Gil and Stella.

Mick Eagleton has ensured that world class live jazz is available in South Bucks since the 1970s to my knowledge, and he should be congratulated for putting his money where his enthusiasm is!!

Just a few quick words about this week at

We have an additional guest this week in the person of vibraphone player Alan Grahame. Alan is a remarkably talented and greatly experienced player, appearing many times on TV AND backing almost every singer worthy of note. You might like to check out the following link from BBC Berkshire

With this combination of players, combined with our regular Mike Wills, Ken Rankine, Martin Hart and of course our revered leader Clive Burton on the trombone, I have suggested that Mike brings along his clarinet, so expect a little bit of Benny Goodman Quartet style of music this week.

One person who will probably be missing from our jazz evening, (as she was last week), Dee, our collector of revenue, has been taken ill, and may still be in the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. 

I sure you would all like to wish her well and to get better soon.

Next week, June 30^th, we retain Ken McCarthy for a second set, but this time Mike Wills is being replaced by that beautifully toned saxophonist Robert Goodhew

So, this week come and celebrate at least the end of referendum campaigning, not that we have heard the last of it no matter what the in/out result is, and next week come along just to celebrate the sounds of jazz!!

Hedsor Jazz

For those who don't get my nags, there is not a great amount to say this week, except that our usual Clive Burton Quintet will be playing at Hedsor from 8.30pm on Thursday for the usual incredible value entry of just £6.

Next week will be different. Next Thursday you will be able to vote in a referendum (as if you haven't heard enough about this already), BUT you will also be able to turn out again in the evening to hear Alan Grahame on vibes, as an extra star addition to our usual Quintet.

Cheque Presentation

This morning Dee and I presented a cheque for £200,the proceeds from our fundraising evening on May 12th with saxophonist Karen Sharp, to the Maidenhead shop of Cancer Research UK. 

Maggie, the manageress, informed us that this year our money is going towards research into children's cancers. She told us that in the near future some very exciting progress on cancer treatments would be announced, and thanked us for our support over the years.

A Brief Message this week, as time slips by!!

This Thursday, June 9^th, we will be having the entire Clive Burton Quintet back to us in regular form for an evening of great, tuneful, modern jazz. Often combined with humour, and always with a raffle, the evening will start at 8.30pm and cost you £6 to get in!!

I offer you an advance notice. On Referendum night, June 23^rd, we will have, in addition to the regular quartet, the vibes of Alan Grahame. Put it in your diary NOW, and the music will console you no matter what the referendum result will be.

The whole episode reminds me of a wartime song! “In, Out, In, Out, Shake it all about”! 

No matter what the result, however, we just know we can trust our politicians and our allies!

On EVERY Thursdays though, you can ALWAYS vote JAZZ!!
